How to Find Wholesale Suppliers for Your Gift Shop (and What to Ask Them)
Updated October 2026
Places to look for wholesale suppliers include trade shows, sales representatives, suppliers’ websites, marketplaces, directories and recommendations from other retailers. Before you order from any of them, ask about the minimum, freight, payment, how to open an account and how damage claims work. This guide walks through each channel and each question, with Upper Deck Ltd's own answers as a worked example.

Where do gift shops find wholesale suppliers?
- Trade shows and gift markets. You see and handle the product, meet the people behind it and can often write an order on the spot. Large markets such as AmericasMart Atlanta run in January and July, and regional gift shows fill in the rest of the year. The cost is travel and time.
- Independent sales reps. Ask a representative which lines and territory they cover, whether they visit stores and how they support reorders. Ask which companies they represent and how reorders reach the supplier.
- Suppliers' own wholesale websites. Many established wholesalers let retailers apply online with a resale certificate and show prices after approval. Check which products are available through the website, which terms apply and how to reach the supplier.
- Online wholesale marketplaces. Compare each marketplace’s checkout process and the payment, minimum-order and shipping terms that apply to each brand. Handy for testing small lines; check each brand's minimum and shipping.
- Directories, catalogs and word of mouth. Directory listings are a starting point, but details can go out of date, so confirm the phone, address and terms on the supplier's own site. Non-competing shop owners in other towns are a good source of tips.
What should you ask a supplier before the first order?
| Question | Why it matters | Upper Deck Ltd's answer |
|---|---|---|
| What is the minimum order? | Sets how small you can start | $250 per order, after quantity discounts, before shipping; $75 for showroom pickup |
| By the piece or by the pack? | Pack sizes change your real opening order | Where shown, ‘Pkg.’ identifies a package quantity and ‘Min.’ identifies a minimum purchase quantity. Check the selling unit before ordering. |
| How is freight charged? | Freight changes your margin | Carrier's actual charge, billed when the order ships; no handling fees; UPS or FedEx, truck for large orders |
| How and when do I pay? | Cash flow | Shipped orders paid by card are charged after packing and weighing; showroom pickup orders are paid at pickup. |
| What do you need to open an account? | How fast you can place a first order | Resale certificate, EIN or tax ID; a person approves each account |
| What if something arrives damaged? | Breakage happens in freight | File online at /pages/claim-form |
| Can I see the product first? | Fewer surprises | Fairhaven showroom, plus gift shows |
How does keystone pricing work?
Keystone means setting the retail price at double what you paid wholesale. If you use keystone pricing as a starting point, check whether the resulting price covers your landed cost and suits your store. Whatever rule you use, add freight into your landed cost before you mark up.
What are the red flags?
- No physical address or working phone number.
- A minimum, freight or payment terms that will not be put in writing.
- Minimums sized for chain stores when you are one shop.
- No clear way to report damage or a short shipment.
- A directory listing that does not match the supplier's own website.
How do you open an Upper Deck Ltd account?
- Step 1: Apply once at /pages/register with your resale certificate, EIN or tax ID.
- Step 2: A person reviews it during office hours, Monday–Thursday, 8 AM–3 PM Eastern.
- Step 3: Log in to see wholesale prices on more than 2,700 items and order online.
